Barbour is a well-known name in heritage menswear. They are well-known for making countrywear jackets in waxed or water-resistant finishes. Is the Barbour jacket too warm for someone who does not do horseback riding or shooting?
Is the Barbour Jacket Warm?
A Brief History Of Barbour
J. Barbour & Sons was established in South Shields by John Barbour in 1894. The company was known for its waxed canvas and cotton jackets in the early 20th century. These jackets were very popular among motorcyclists. Between 1936 and 1977, the company also designed full racing suits for British teams.
Country houses and landed gentry noticed the water-resistant qualities of waxed cotton pieces. They were also increasingly popular in shooting and equestrian sport.
The Royal Warrant was issued by the Queen of England and the Prince of Wales in 1974 for “Manufacturers of Weatherproofing and Protective Clothing”. Barbour can display the Royal Coat of Arms, indicating that they are an official supplier to Royal families, on their products.
The company employs nearly 1,000 people and earns around PS225M annually. It is still a family-owned business. Many products, including the famous waxed jackets are still made in England. However, production has been outsourced to other countries.
What Jackets Does Barbour Produce?
This is, however, a broad question. It is helpful to think of the Barbour jacket as three distinct styles: the waxed, quilted, and waterproof.
The Waxed Barbour Jacket
Barbour’s original jacket. Most are medium-weight and have a tartan lined interior. There are many models and sizes available, with each offering subtle variations.
Perhaps the most famous is the Bedale. This is a casual-fitted cut that’s ideal for riding and shooting. However, it will also look great in the Cotswalds and Central Park.
The Ashby version of the Bedale is more modern and tailored. The collar is substantial, the waxed canvas is waxed, and there are hand-warming pockets. However, it comes in a slimmer silhouette.
Both models are light-weight and can be used in the fall and spring. Customers can add a storm or Sylkoil Hood to the waxed collection.
The Sylkoil has a very traditional look and has generated a lot of discussion within the Ask Andy community!
The Quilted Barbour Jacket
The quilted jacket is an interesting hybrid that claims to provide the “perfect balance of warmth & weight”. There are many styles to choose from: the full-cut Classic Liddesdale or the more fitted Powell.
The weights of both will differ. The Liddesdale’s product information is very light, literally. It only states that it has both a shell and a polyester lined lining. It can be worn in Spring/Summer or Fall/Winter.
With 50g of wadding, the Powell Barbour jacket is the heavier piece with a fleece lining and full fleece. All of the wadding, lining and shell are made from polyester. Although you may not want to climb a mountain while wearing it, it will keep you warm in all weather conditions down to 32/0 degrees.
The Waterproof Barbour Jacket
Barbour offers waterproof jackets in addition to the waxed and quilted ones. The waterproof jackets are available in many styles, just like the other ones.
The Lorden Mac jacket is a classic, single-breasted, trench coat that hits around mid-thigh. The jacket is lined with cotton and has an exterior shell made of cotton. It doesn’t have a neck latch or a belt at its waist, as opposed to the Burberry trench.

The Amersham jacket and Benson jacket are zip-up styles that can be worn casually. They can be worn at the hip or below, and are best worn with a pair of sneakers and jeans. These two models appear to be mid-weight with polyamide shells and linings. Each model comes with a handy rollup hood that you can pull out for rainy days. British weather…
The Grenson Barbour’s closest winter parka is the Grenson . This jacket is fully waterproof and features a baffle-quilted interior, faux-fur trim and a hood.
Are Barbour jackets warm?
Yes, for the most part. These jackets are different from winter performance fabric pieces or parkas, so you wouldn’t take them to the North Pole. Barbour jackets are warm enough to take a stroll through the city, or down a country road.
Is a Barbour jacket worth it?
A Barbour jacket can be expensive. Prices start at $200 MSRP, and go up to $400 for a waxed one. They are, however, relatively inexpensive when compared to down-filled jackets like Montcler and Canada Goose.
If you are looking for a timeless silhouette and a heritage brand, the Barbour jacket is worth it.
Barbour offers two types of jackets in terms of warmth: Waxed cotton jackets and quilted jackets. These jackets are designed to provide warmth and are not added as an afterthought.
So. Now it’s up to you to decide whether you want quilted or wax jackets.
My intuition is that if you fish on cold days, you should opt for a waxed-cotton jacket (I recommend Barbour Bedale Waxed Jacket). However, if your outdoor activities include walking in the woods where it can get cool at night, then the Barbour quilted jackets such as the DEVON will keep you warm even with a little rain or moisture.
